Cameroon demolishes street stalls for Pope's visit
Cameroonian security forces have smashed up the street stalls, where thousands of people earn a living, to give the capital Yaounde a face-lift for a visit by Pope Benedict next week.
Pope Benedict makes his first trip to Africa as pontiff next week, visiting Cameroon before continuing to Angola to mark 500 years of Christian evangelism there.
"My 10 years of investments have been ruined. I don't know now what to do to survive," wailed Mariane Ngoupendji Monday when she found her typing and printing shop reduced to rubble.
"Will the Pope's visit replace what I've lost?" she said.
Ngoupendji, 43, collapsed weeping to the ground as youths pulled pieces of corrugated iron, girders and planks fromthe ruins, hoping to sell them or use them to build elsewhere.
Many people make their living through informal stalls or boutiques, selling everything from imported electrical goods to local produce in a country where millions of people live in poverty even though it boasts one of Africa's biggest economies.
But authorities say the stalls, ranging from simple wooden shelves to secure lock-ups built with steel and concrete, are an eye-sore and began to tear them down last week. No compensation will be offered, the government said.
"On Monday the authorities of the Yaounde urban municipality continued pulling down illegally erected structures down in the town centre with the support of security forces," state radio reported Monday.
"They vowed that the process will continue as part of efforts to embellish the city and give it a new face-lift."
Yaounde council officials could not be reached for comment.
Security forces have deployed in large numbers to prevent trouble. Previous attempts to clear traders from African cities have triggered widespread violence, including in Senegal before last year's Organisation of the Islamic Conference summit.
Police beat youths and stallholders at the weekend on Yaounde's Avenue Kennedy, where many hawkers sell cell phones and other electrical items imported from Dubai, witnesses said.
"I saw gendarmes and police chasing after fellow Cameroonians, beating them up with such ferocity and smashing their goods," said a Cameroon Telecommunications company worker, who watched from a third storey window as police cleared stalls near Avenue Kennedy Saturday.
"Why not simply ask them to assemble their goods and move away instead of destroying everything. Must the Pope's visit bring so much trouble for the people?" said the worker, who declined to be identified for fear of reprisals.
But a senior police officer said stallholders had refused to comply with several previous requests to move on.
"Now, with the Pope coming, the authorities are left with no other choice than to use force to get them out," he told Reuters.
"African traditional hospitality demands that you keep your house clean when expecting a guest."

Top Bush Aides to Testify in Attorneys’ Firings
WASHINGTON — Karl Rove and Harriet E. Miers, top former aides to President George W. Bush, will testify under oath to a House committee investigating the firings of nine United States attorneys in 2007, under an agreement announced Wednesday by the panel.
A lawyer for Karl Rove said he was pleased by the agreement.
The agreement settled a rancorous dispute that began in mid-2007 when the House Judiciary Committee subpoenaed Mr. Rove and Ms. Miers, who, according to e-mail messages released by the Justice Department, played a role in the firings.
In a statement after the agreement was announced, Representative John Conyers Jr., a Michigan Democrat and chairman of the judiciary panel, declared victory and said the committee had finally succeeded in breaking through the Bush administration’s absolute immunity claims.
Mr. Conyers called the agreement “a vindication of the search for truth.” He added, “I am determined to have it known whether U.S. attorneys in the Department of Justice were fired for political reasons, and if so, by whom.”
A key factor in ending the impasse appeared to be the pressure on both sides exerted by President Obama’s legal team, which had urged each side to reach the arrangement. Up until the deal, lawyers for Mr. Bush had stuck by their assertions that Mr. Rove, a senior Bush political adviser, and Ms. Miers, a former White House counsel, could not testify because they were protected by executive privilege. Bush lawyers had continued to invoke that legal claim even after Mr. Bush left office.
Under the agreement, Mr. Rove and Ms. Miers will provide depositions and sworn public testimony about the firings, but the scope of their testimony will be limited to the dismissals and closely related issues.
Moreover, the two former Bush officials will not be asked about their conversations with Mr. Bush on the subject or their discussions with other members of the White House counsel’s office.
The committee will also be able to ask questions about the case of former Gov. Don Siegelman of Alabama, a Democrat who has said he was victim of a politically motivated prosecution, possibly involving administration officials.
Robert D. Luskin, a lawyer for Mr. Rove, said in a statement that his client was pleased by the agreement: “Mr. Rove has consistently maintained that he would not assert any personal privileges to refuse to appear or testify, but was required to follow the direction of the president on matters of executive privilege.”
In a letter to Mr. Conyers, Gregory B. Craig, the White House counsel, said, “President Obama is pleased that the parties have agreed to resolve this matter amicably.”
A spokesman for Mr. Bush said in a statement that the settlement was reached “at the urging of the Obama administration.” The spokesman, Rob Saliterman, expressed the hope that the agreement “will finally put this matter to rest.”
